Reproducing Network Experiments in a Time-controlled Emulation Environment

چکیده
Network emulation environments are a valuable research tool that offer the possibility of conducting complex network experiments and can be seen as an enabler of experimental reproducibility. Keen to quantify this approach, we reproduce experiments presented in QJump [1] in the timecontrolled network emulation framework, called SELENA [2]. We first describe in detail how we built the experimental setup. Next, we evaluate the SELENA emulation framework using real world applications, Hadoop MapReduce, memcached and PTPd. We demonstrate our findings, presenting the differences between the results obtained on a hardware testbed and in the emulation environment.

متن کاملEmulation of Computer Networks with Netkit
An emulator is a software or hardware environment that is capable of closely reproducing the functionalities of a real world system. Emulators, especially if implemented in software, are very useful for performing experiments that might compromise the operation of the target system or simply when the real system itself is not available. This is true in particular for computer networks, where co...
متن کاملEmulation Testbed for IEEE 802.15.4 Networked Systems
IEEE 802.15.4 based devices are a key component for mobile and pervasive computing. However, their small dimensions and reduced resources, together with the intrinsic properties of wireless communication, make it difficult to evaluate such networked systems through realworld trials. In this paper we present an emulation testbed intended for the evaluation of IEEE 802.15.4 networked systems. The...
متن کاملModeling and Emulation of Internet Paths
Network emulation subjects real applications and protocols to controlled network conditions. Most existing network emulators are fundamentally link emulators, not path emulators: they concentrate on faithful emulation of the transmission and queuing behavior of individual network hops in isolation, rather than a path as a whole. This presents an obstacle to constructing emulations of observed I...
